Selling quality, locally sourced Mushrooms that are grown on used coffee grounds! Can you taste the difference?
Here at Urban Mushroom Company (UMC), our core mission is to tackle the environmental impacts of used coffee grounds through upcycling the waste to a finished product. We also strive to tackle social issues within the community through: education, hands-on workshops and more!
From used coffee grounds to gorgeous mushrooms.
Our process begins with local coffee shops donating their used coffee grounds to form one half of our mixture. Mycelium spawn is thoroughly mixed with the coffee grounds to create the starting point of our mushrooms. It’s then bagged, sealed and left to incubate in our temperature controlled space for 2 to 4 weeks. Once the bag has turned white, it means they’re ready to begin fruiting.
To fruit, we cut holes into the bag to allow them grow vertically. Once the edge of the caps of the Oyster mushroom starts to flatten out or turn upwards, it’s time to pick the mushrooms!HOW IT WORKS
We collect used coffee grounds from coffee shops around Exeter which otherwise would have been sent to landfill.MORE DETAILS

The Urban Mushroom Company is driven by the work of dedicated student volunteers at the University of Exeter who strive to provide a wide base of environmentally friendly mushroom-based goods, whilst turning the damaging waste from coffee shops into high quality mushroom blocks. Founded in 2018, we’ve expanded month on month and aim to grow into a sustainable social enterprise and are ever closer to our goal.MEET THE TEAM
